Have you ever looked back at old photos of yourself growing up? There’s you as a baby on your back. Then there’s you crawling on all fours. Look, there’s you taking your first steps. You grow.Growth upwards. It’s the most basic form of progress we humans understand. No wonder we think economic progress must always take the same shape. That ever-rising line of growth on a chart.And what happens when growth, in and of itself, loses its charm? Well, that’s sort of where we are. Economies keep growing, but, for most, life doesn’t seem to be getting any better.
Our global economy is degenerative by default. We take the planet’s resources. Make them into things we want. Use ‘em. Then chuck ‘em. It’s a one way system that runs counter to the natural cycles of the planet.
What we need is economies that make us thrive, whether or not they grow. We need to transform our economies from ones that are degenerative by default, into ones that are regenerative by design.
